Wood Carving and African Handicraft

For many years, the art of wood carving from Africa is known to be one of the most beautiful, natural and unique in the world. It has maintained its huge economic and cultural importance to the people of Africa in general and to the artists in particular. This art of wood carving is centuries old and is passed down form generation to generation. This enables the work to become not only consistent, but also better with time.

The exact impact of wood carving on culture differs from tribe to tribe. Among the Akan of Ghana and La Cote d'Ivoire the use of wood carving in symbolism is recognized right form family (Obusua) to the state (Oman) level. As an example, wooden stools symbolise power and authority. In Kenya, among the Kalenjin tribe, wooden clubs (Chepunyo) are carried only by circumcised men and their design varies from one age group to another. This culture is obeyed, sometimes in total disregard of ones high and powerful status in modern day society.Such is the power of wood carving in African culture.

The economic aspect of wood carvings, on the other hand, is a more recent development. With better communication among nations, and the onset of the internet in the nineteen nineties, the beautiful, unique African wood carvings acquired wider exposure to the outside world. They were marketed as home and office decors, gifts to loved ones and domestic utensils. They did not disappoint.

Many different types of materials are used in African Handicraft. Wood and soapstone are commonly used to make unique, exciting sculptures while baskets are woven from natural fiber such as sisal. In keeping with tradition, sculpting is done by men while basket weaving is done by women. Most sculptures take the form of animals and humans with close link to the country of origin. Even when African handicraft items are based on the same subject matter and design, the fact that they are handmade with simple tool, makes them very unique. No two items will be alike. Wood remains the most important material to the artists mainly because it is easily accessible. It is also relatively easy to carve items out of wood enabling the artists to express their thoughts more easily and freely.

However, do not be fooled that African wood cravings would not be of high quality just because they are made from some natural material and with simple tools. The wood is either soft or hard - Both types have their own bads and goods. Whether the wood used is soft or hard, does not affect the quality of the end product. The final product will be something you will be extremely proud to show off.

The purchase of unique, original African wood carvings is on the rise because the products are truly exquisite and one of a kind piece of art. They are made from materials local to the country of origin by very talented and hardworking citizens of Africa. Just one look at these beautiful creations will assure you that you are not only in the presence of a beautiful handicraft but also something which represents African culture, history and heritage.

The best thing to do is to test the waters (i.e. the market) first before taking the plunge into a full-pledged handcrafted jewelry business. Here are some great venues where you can start up.

1. Handcrafted Jewelry Parties at Home - this is where many successful handcrafted jewelers start out. They invite their friends for some snack or dinner one afternoon or evening. As desert is serve, and small talk begins, you can show your guests your latest creations. Let them take a look and feel of your products. Have mirrors handy and allow guests to try your jewels out for size. This relaxed and friendly environment could be a great venue not only to take pride of your handiwork but also to sell them to people who are close to you.

2. Handicraft Fairs - after hosting some parties, you may now try to venture into the outside world, and a great place to do this is in handicraft fairs, where people of the same interest gather to look and shop for interesting finds. Fairs provide great settings novice jewelers as they provide good learning experiences such as the latest trends in the business. The great thing about online shops is you could reach a wide market without having to leave your house. For How Much You Can Sell Your Handcrafted Jewelry

This is another area of handcrafted jewelry business that perplexes a lot of people, however it is actually very simple. You just have to take not of the costs of your materials, how much work you have placed on the crafts, and the overhead. To do this you need three steps:

1. List the cost all the materials and tools you used for making the jewelry.

2. Carefully think how much time and effort you gave to make your goods and decide how much you are willing to pay yourself. Perhaps in the beginning it is reasonable to pay yourself $10 or so for every hour you worked. You can increase this as your business grows.

3. Finally, take not of all the other expenses that is related to your jewelry making. This could include the rent of the stall in the trade fair you joined, or the website maintenance expenses, or the telephone charges you got from calling contacts. Usually, these miscellaneous expenses can be estimated by taking 25% of the your material and labor costs.

With these in mind you would know how much your goods are worth, so that you would neither overprice nor under-price.

Making money out of your handcrafted jewelry is not as difficult as it seems. With determination and hard work you could be earning from your hobby in no time.

They wish they had a service like this after their careers are over. That is too late.

There are thousands of professional athletes, men and women both, who would be glad to let somebody do the work for them for a fee.

Another option for you if you are artistic and really love handicraft is to design greeting cards.

Assembling greeting cards is really fun and many people would love to get a card made specifically for themselves.

Handcrafted Vs Handmade

No matter how hard I searched I couldn't find a definitive answer to the never ending debate "Handmade vs. Handcrafted". If you're into any aspect of art or crafting I can almost guarantee you've had this discussion before one form or another. So what do the experts say?

The American Heritage Dictionary defines "Handmade" as; made or prepared by hand rather than by machine. It's definition of "Handcrafted"; to fashion or make by hand.

Merriam Webster:

Handmade; made by hand or by a hand process. Handcrafted; to fashion by handicraft. Handicraft;

1: a: manual skill b: an occupation requiring skill with the hands

2: the articles fashioned by those engaged in handicraft.

Webster:

Handmade; made by hand or a hand process

Handcrafted; A work produced by hand labor

Almost every definition was identical. For fun I got out my old dusty Webster's Seventh New Collegiate Dictionary published in 1963 to see what they had to say 45 years ago. I wasn't surprised to see there wasn't much of a difference. Handmade; made by hand or a hand process. Handcraft; to fashion by handicraft. Handicraft; 1a: manual skill. b: an occupation requiring a skill with the hands.

Lastly I tried to find a more modern definition so I tried Wikipedia. Handmade; means something made by hand, rather than by a machine.
Much to my surprise the word handcrafted came up with "No article title matches". Tried "What is handcrafted" only to come up with a ton of ad's for people describing handcrafted (as they see it) items for sale.

After several hours of research I gave up. I guess I'm going to have to give you my narrative of handcrafted vs. handmade and let you decide which classification to choose.

Since most agree that "handmade" is a process of making something by hand, or with your hands, does it mean entirely by hand or the process of putting something together using your hands? Reading the definitions I found, it means just about the same thing.

So you receive a jigsaw puzzle for your birthday and put it together using your hands. Did you handcraft the puzzle or was the puzzle handmade by you? What if you actually drew out a picture, cut it up into hundreds of pieces then put it back together again, is it handmade or handcrafted? You actually made the puzzle didn't you?

In an article I wrote Art vs. Crafts I mentioned the definition for "Artisan"; "also called a "craftsman; skilled manual worker who uses tools and machinery in a particular craft" . An interesting interpretation on the subject.

If you were presented with a kit to make a bracelet and did, I believe your bracelet would fall under the category "handcrafted". You used your skills and put together something that was pre-fabricated.

Using the same analogy if you were to use the same kit and produce something other than a bracelet, or enhanced the bracelet using the parts in a different manner than described or instructed, then you'd still have "handcrafted". If you were to actually make and add additional parts or assemble the kit in a different manner, then I would say it's still "handcrafted".

I believe this because I purchase and use prefabricated items for the creation of the items I design jewelry or otherwise. I may purchase jewelry findings or artisan-made beads to enhance or complete a piece of jewelry I design and make. How I used the findings, where I put them, and the ability to design the jewelry around the findings I use, I call handcrafted. Is this bad, no. Either way, I used my hands and my mind (what matters most) in the creation of a particular item. And yes, I use a variety of tools to help me in the process.

As much as I'd hate to admit it, I think "handmade" should refer to items which are uniquely made from totally raw materials. If you raise the sheep, process the wool, then weave it by hand into a rug, I'd consider that "handmade". But wait, you need tools to weave a rug don't you? So does that knock it out of the handmade category? What if you use a machine in the process? But what if you built that machine yourself? Is your rug handmade or handcrafted? Oh my gosh, this is too much informational overload to process.

I work with natural materials in a different art medium; gourds They are a natural material. I grow them, dry them, clean them, sand, carve, inlay, embellish, paint and finish them in different manners. I still consider them handcrafted rather than handmade because I didn't make the gourd itself. I simply used something and added to it using my hands and imaginative ability. I use my ability to craft something out of an existing item.

Is there an answer to the difference between handcrafted and handmade? I've considered which classification to add my own work to several times as I wrote this article. Which sounds better, handcrafted or handmade? Would it make a difference to you if you were given the opportunity to purchase an exact duplicate item; one marked handcrafted and the other handmade? Would you care so long as you knew someone used their hands to create the item? Does it boil down to keywords used in searching Google or Yahoo as to which you buy? Or are you going to purchase something you like? That's the ultimate question.

The line I have to draw between handcrafted and handmade is the mass produced machine made items being classified as handmade only because someone had to turn the switch from on to off to start the process.

This debate will go on for years well beyond our time. It truly doesn't matter. You'll do a search for "handmade" first then proceed to "handcrafted" thinking you'll get a better result or the exact opposite. Either way, what you'll get is items which are made by someone using their hands. Someone who has put their heart and soul into the product hoping someone out there will appreciate their work and purchase the item.

Don't limit yourself because of what I or anyone else says. Handcrafted, handmade is the same. If you like it, appreciate it, and it makes you happy, by all means purchase it. After all, it was made by hand for someone special; you.

Our Love for Handicraft Findings and Handicraft Jewellery

Handicraft findings have always inspired the mind with an artistic bend. Whether it is in the jewellery one wears, or it is in the dresses one dons, a hint of ethnicity envelopes them. And not just the clothes or the jewellery, if you have a flair for hand-crafted objects or tribal things, then even the upholstery or the decorative pieces in your home has a touch of ethnicity. However, handicraft jewellery is more frequently used by many than other objects.

Handicraft findings jewellery or decorative objects are definitely artistic, mostly because of the fact that they are made by people who are closer to nature and made with the things - like beads and shells -- that are found ubiquitously in and around that region. For instance, we find frequent usage of stones, gemstones, precious stones and semi-precious stones in jewellery made by hands. Then there are those hand crafted ones which are prepared using cowry shells and bones.

Hand made jewellery is not confined to only such objects. There is frequent usage of other materials such as wood and brass that make some really admirable trinkets. Varicoloured beads and different kinds of materials are bedded together to make exquisite ornaments. For instance, beads and sea shells, and brass with small wood beads make brilliant combinations for necklaces and ear pieces.

Jewellery in Handicraft findings has a very earthy and tribal appeal. From everyday jewellery to highly fashionable ornaments, there is something for everyone and for all kinds of occasions. Most of the handicraft jewellery is inspired by the tribal and rural elements that have the touch of traditional handmade quality. Such may or may not have some symbolic meaning. Most of the times, they do have some symbolic representation in the materials used to make the ornaments, which again is particular to the group or clan producing these jewellery.

Handicraft Findings of the Past, Enjoy Attention Today

As time progressed, the jewellery industry has witnessed the innovation and usage of different kinds of materials in making fashionable and trendy jewellery from time to time. Such materials have defined trends and times, and sometimes even a whole era has been named after the discovery and frequent usage of any specific metal or element. The usage of different materials in jewellery and accessories, dresses and attires have been proven by the handicraft findings from archaeological surveys and study of history.

Some of the innovations of the past are still enjoying huge popularity in the jewellery industry prevalent around the world. And not just the past, even to this day, there are clans and tribes, like in South Asian countries and in African region, where people are closer to nature. Handicraft findings and small-scale manufacturing point to the fact that people are making, selling, buying and wearing jewellery that fall under handicraft category.

Jewellery that is considered a part of handicraft findings has immense popularity, especially those which belong to cultures and civilisations of the past. There is usage of various kinds of masks as pendants, bones in traditional earrings and rustic lavaliere, cowry shells in all kinds of jewellery and accessories, wood in bracelets and armlets, and many more such material that evoke a crude and folksy appeal. The designs and the material used to make such jewellery are rough to touch and have dull lustre.

There is extensive usage of flora and fauna designs in handicraft findings. Animals like zebra, cheetah, giraffe, tiger, fish, birds etc. have repeatedly been the inspiration in the designs of such ornaments. Designs are carved into wood or other impressionable material to get the desired look. These days, jewellery of handicraft findings is not restricted to materials close to nature. How You Can Make and Use Pressed Flowers!

Pressed flowers are popular still today. I think they can be used quite successfully in a number of ways. Not only flowers, but different types of grasses etc., too. Generally, all kinds of flowers and grasses can be pressed, one way or another.

I would say however, that when you go looking for flowers to press, always choose the best specimens that you can find at the time. It stands to reason that if the flowers are not at their freshest, you are not going to get a very good result after pressing. If the flowers are already knocked about, this process will not revive them.

So, once you have the best of what you were looking for, preferably on a clear day, not a wet one, cut away any thicker parts of your flowers so that it will press flat.

Even as a child I can remember scouring fields in Warwickshire for flowers and taking them home, to press later between the pages of a very thick and old book. In fact, even to this day, I still sometimes come across very old pressed flowers that have kept remarkably well.

This method of pressing must date back hundreds of years. When I cleared out my house I came across a book my mother had pressed when she was a child. The thicker the book you use for this, the better. The very old, thick type, of leather bound family bibles are often used.

In the main I would suggest that you choose books which have absorbent pages. Books with shiny glossy pages are not to be recommended. Whatever you do, make sure that your flowers are clean and it is very important that they are dry, with any surplus bits removed.

Place them carefully in a thick book. You will then need to add weight on top of this. In the past I have used books with heavy full bottles on top, or anything that will press weight on to the book.

Now you need to leave them and forget about them for a while. Probably for around six weeks. This is the original method. Years ago these flowers used to be put into drawing books, named and dated.

Now however, in craft shops, and often gift shops, you can buy flower presses, whereby your flowers are wedged between sheets of paper with a piece of wood either end of this. What actually happens, is that you tighten four screws each end to work the press. You still insert papers in between.

However, pressed flowers can be used for many items, such as paper weights, tags for gifts, bookmarks and candles, just to name several. To make cards though, you would need some paper adhesive, a smallish brush which is soft, tweezers, some pressed flowers and also leaves would be good in this instance and some paper for your card.

Firstly, if you have chosen what you want for your card, just ascertain that your items will fit well into your card. You could apply some lace to your card as a background, or even a piece of different coloured card to your paper, as a base on your folded card.

Then use your tweezers carefully to pick up your flower or leaf, stem etc. and put adhesive on the back and place them carefully into position and press gently down. When you have completed this, it would be a very good idea to put something heavy on top. I use a heavy iron, but thick books will do.

You can obtain a matt adhesive for paper, which you could later apply lightly with a brush over your flowers. Note, you will only need a thin layer. Leave it to dry.

Home Crafts - Taking Your Favorite Old Record Albums and Showing Them Off

A lot of us still remember the days of playing our favorite vinyl record albums on a turntable, and can recall the anticipation of bringing that album home from the record store to give it a spin and play our radio favorite again and again. Here is a classic way to resurrect one or two of those old record albums and show them off in an artsy way and protect them at the same time.

I was inspired to create this decorating project when I came across an album shaped hanging frame with a glass cover to protect the front of the album jacket. That of course is the part that holds the record itself. The frame was designed to display album covers on a wall as decorative art. Throughout the decades of modern music as we know it, specifically the time period from the psychedelic 60s to the present time, the design and artwork that would go in to an album jacket cover, and the more current CD covers, at times has resulted in phenomenal and historically significant art. So, when I discovered this frame designed to show off some of those more artsy album covers, I was immediately drawn to the idea and started to make a mental list of the old albums I had that might work well displayed on my walls.

Then, like that proverbial light bulb flashing over my head, I had a revolutionary idea that had me jumping through the ceiling with excitement. What if I took an old record album or two, great musically speaking, but lacking in artistic interpretation on the cover, and used that same frame I found to display the vinyl record itself. Of course, you must be asking what is so original about that idea? Well, pull up a chair and I will show you how to make that dark vinyl disc a work of art.

First let us look at the supplies you will need for this attention drawing project:

·Square album frame with glass cover: (12 ¼in. X 12 ¼in.);
·An album, without the jacket cover
·Scrapbooking theme paper, theme wrapping paper, or any artistic paper that projects the message or theme of the album itself.
·Thicker cardboard cut in to the square dimensions of your frame (this should match the shape given above that is intended for an album cover to fit inside)
·Adhesive glue stick or artist spray adhesive

To put this framed art project together, you are simply taking an old record album and showing it off on your wall in the same way that music artists are awarded once their recordings reach a certain level of sales. Whereas their successfully selling record albums are represented in gold or platinum, our framed records will be the actual albums themselves with a decorative theme border surrounding them.

Step 1: You may have a square piece of the thick cardboard included with your frame. However, if you do not, just cut a square piece of cardboard in the dimensions listed above from an ordinary cardboard box. Test fit the cardboard inside the frame before going any further. Once you have a fit, set your cardboard on a flat surface safe for cutting upon. Now, take your album of choice, and place it exactly in the center. A perfect way to find the true center is to first measure your square and make a pen mark at that point. Then, simply lay the album over the cardboard and line up the hole in the middle of the album with that pen mark. Bet the inventor of the record album never realized the center hole had a dual purpose, did he? Once you have marked your place, take a sharp utility blade and slowly score the cardboard along the circular edge of the album. Once complete, remove the album and cut completely through your scored cardboard to remove the inner circle. You are now ready for the next step.

Step 2: You will now want to take your scrapbooking paper or wrapping paper of choice, and cover your cardboard using an adhesive glue stick. Make sure the paper is flat against the cardboard without any bubbles, and then cut out the center circular portion where the album itself will be inserted. Once the paper is dry, place it inside the album frame, insert your album, and place the protective backing that came with the frame back in place.

That is it! Your artsy framed old record album is ready to be hung on the wall and admired. Have fun with it.

Aesthetic Sense - Interior Designer Or Designing Your Own Interior

We all have diverse opinions when it comes to deciding the best interiors and furniture for our home. Conciliating and compromising are words that are not in our vocabulary when looking at different pieces of furniture. We constantly want the pieces of furniture we chose to be ideal and just right for our home. Everything should be perfect - from dining furniture including dining tables and chair to bedroom furniture.

We have two options when it comes to the aesthetics of our home. First, we can seek for the services of a certified interior decorator. These designers are professionals and experts and they definitely have good knowledge when it comes to what is existing and accessible in the market that will suit our budget and our taste. They can sometimes propose and advise us to pick out a theme that will reflect our personal partialities and our personalities and assist us in making the right resolutions consequently.

Second option will be utilizing our own cleverness, resourcefulness, creativity and originality to save on expenses, as to seeking for the services of a professional.

The advantages of not utilizing the services of professionals are it is cost-effective because we control our budget and we don't have to pay for their services, we can have the freedom of expression in choosing the furniture that fits our taste and finally, the execution will not be complicated because we don't have to deal with others. We only deal with ourselves. The only disadvantage of not utilizing the services of a professional is if we don't have the enough creativity, thus, leading to frustrations when our desires will not be properly executed. Whereas if we hire professionals, we don't have to do anything, all we have to do is just explain what we want and provide the budget, and we just do nothing and wait for everything to be completed.

The bottom line is, in this day and age, selecting the best pieces of modern furniture is really up to us and our preferences.

The Craft Store VS the Internet Site

By Chuck R Stewart

The world is getting more high tech every day. Products are mass produced. Items that used to have individual character are devolving into commodities. Everything is getting slicker and slicker. What's happening to individuality? Individuality has not disappeared. The human drive for individuality is being fostered by the growth of interest in handmade crafts. More and more people are taking up the making of handcrafts as a way of expressing their artistic individuality. But these handcrafts can't be just the same old things that your grandmother made. No antimacassars here. New types of crafts are being dreamed up every day. For example, have you ever heard of a purse dangle? No? It's the same as a handbag pendant. Jewelry for your purse. Isn't that a fun concept?

But there's not really a Great Divide between the world of high technology and the world of handmade crafts. As it turns out, it is the world of high technology that is allowing handmade crafts to flourish. The best and easiest way to sell handmade crafts is to sell them directly on the Internet. Sure, there are stores out there that sell craft items, but the buyers have to know where they are and have to travel there. And for the seller, the process from making the item to putting the item in the buyer's shopping bag can be complicated. The artist may have to meet with the store owner-on the store owner's schedule. The store owner surely will want to examine the item and either accept it for sale or reject it. Then there are the terms of the sale. A store owner has overhead to pay. That means that she will take a large portion of the artist's profits. There can be many other complications in the contract, such as payments for promotional activities.

Selling on the Internet is much easier. The buyer can just sit at home and browse the sites. And even finding the sites is easy. Just Google the item that you are looking for, and the site where it is located will come up. The most widely known site, eBay, allows anyone to sell just about anything to any buyer. Its fame makes it a go-to place for these buyers. The artist doesn't have to make herself known to the world because the world knows eBay. Other sites are more specifically craft oriented. For example, Etsy is a site that is becoming more and more well known as a place to find just handmade crafts and vintage items. On Etsy, the artist has full control of a mini-site. She can create an identity consisting of a profile, a photograph, and a logo. The selling process is also inexpensive. The cost is only twenty cents per item for three months, and Etsy's commission is only 3.5 per cent. The artist can upload multiple photographs of each item.

People are eager to purchase handmade objects because unique possessions allow them to express their individuality in a truly modern way.

Chuck Stewart just bought a purse dangle for his wife. He finds that it is a handmade craft that she loves.

STICK FISH

Stick Fish,Supplies:sticks, leaf, twigs, wiggle eye, glue guns, construction paper or cardboard sheet, cut 81/2 X 51/, craft scissors
slice of a tree branch or trunk, "tree cookie" could be used (pruning shears needed to cut sticks to correct length)
Age Level: Preschool to Middle School, depending on degree of adult assistance available

This is a simple, inexpensive craft. A glue gun works better than liquid glue and for that reason adult assistance will be required. Adults should select sticks about the width of an adult's little finger and about 6 to 8 inches long. The trick to making this craft is to find sticks that have a slight curve to them.

Each child will also need a supply of twigs, one wiggle eye and a leaf or two. Glue the "backbone" to construction paper, cardboard, or a wood slice before the activity for young children. Older children can do all the gluing themselves. The children break the twigs to the same length and lay them across the "backbone" of their fish. Young children will need help gluing the "bones" in place at intervals along the backbone. The leaves can be used without cutting if they are pointed, or they can be notched with a scissors to form the head and tail of the fish. Glue the eye in place on the leaf.
